Find Out Where People Engage: Discover the Best Apps for Every Activity

Have you ever packed workout clothes for a vacation, only to realize that you never actually wore them when you returned home?

It seems that the location of your trip might play a role.

According to data from exercise apps, which track users’ physical locations and search history, travelers tend to be more active in certain destinations compared to others.

Strava, a popular fitness app with 100 million users in 195 countries, reveals that travelers are more active than locals in smaller cities in Europe, such as Split (Croatia), Dodecanese Islands (Greece), Lagos (Portugal), Las Palmas (Spain), and Nord-Aurdal (Norway).

These cities are known for their warm climates, coastal environments, and outdoor recreational opportunities. Nord-Aurdal, in particular, is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts for activities like hiking, cycling, fishing, and skiing. It is located about 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of Lillehammer, which hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics.

On the other hand, Strava’s data shows that travelers are less active compared to locals in parts of the Caribbean and Central America, including Trinidad and Tobago, Dominican Republic, Philippines, Venezuela, and Costa Rica.

Even active travelers tend to take it easy on vacation. According to Strava’s data, nearly four in 10 runners reduce their running times by at least 30% during their summer vacations in 2022.

Fitness classes booked abroad

ClassPass, a fitness membership app, has also gathered data on where Americans are booking fitness classes when they travel abroad.

Interestingly, major tourist destinations like Paris and London are not at the top of the list. Instead, American travelers are booking classes the most in Lisbon (Portugal), Montreal (Canada), Copenhagen (Denmark), Stockholm (Sweden), Madrid (Spain), Barcelona (Spain), Dublin (Ireland), Toronto (Canada), Vancouver (Canada), and Berlin (Germany).

It is worth noting that ClassPass does not operate in Italy, according to a ClassPass representative.

Sedona, with a population of around 10,000 people, is a popular travel destination known for its physical and spiritual wellness offerings. Many visitors are drawn to the so-called “energy vortexes” believed to have healing properties.

“For trail activities on the beach or in the mountains, we see the highest number of activities happening in the summer in the U.S., specifically in July,” said Meaghan Praznik, a representative from AllTrails, a popular app for exploring outdoor trails.
