FIFA Temporarily Suspends President of Spain Soccer Federation for Inappropriate World Cup Final Gesture

FIFA has temporarily suspended Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish soccer federation, from his duties while an investigation is conducted into his behavior during the Women’s World Cup final. This investigation stems from an incident where Rubiales kissed a player without her consent. In response to the suspension, Rubiales refused to resign, despite pressure from various sources including the Spanish government, women players, soccer clubs, and officials.

The disciplinary panel of FIFA has not provided a timeline for a ruling on the case. Depending on their findings, sanctions can range from warnings and fines to suspensions from the sport.

Interestingly, the Spanish federation had even threatened to take action against star player Jenni Hermoso for not accepting Rubiales’s version of the incident. However, FIFA has stepped in to protect Hermoso’s fundamental rights and the integrity of the disciplinary proceedings. FIFA has ordered Rubiales and the Spanish soccer federation to refrain from contacting Hermoso or anyone close to her.

FIFA’s suspension effectively prevents Rubiales from working in soccer or having contact with other officials. The disciplinary judge overseeing the case is Jorge Palacio, a Colombian lawyer known for his work in women’s rights.

While FIFA has taken action, there has been no comment from UEFA, the European soccer body, regarding Rubiales’ role as its vice president.
