Festival Interrupted as Mudslide Sweeps Through Town

Officials in the picturesque vacation town of Bardonecchia in the Italian Alps are currently coordinating a large-scale cleanup effort and searching for any possible missing individuals following a devastating mudslide that occurred over the weekend. The streets of Bardonecchia are now covered in mud and debris after a “violent” mudslide on Sunday, which also caused flooding along local riverbanks. According to the latest reports from ANSA, only one person has sustained minor injuries as a result of the mudslide. Initially, five people were reported missing, but a recent Facebook post from Alberto Cirio, the governor of Italy’s Piedmont region, confirms that all five individuals have been located and accounted for.

Despite finding the missing individuals, the damage inflicted upon Bardonecchia is extensive. A hotel and the local police station have sustained severe damage, as have nearby bridges, rendering the town accessible only to emergency services. ANSA reports that the entire local police car fleet has been destroyed and approximately 120 people have been displaced. Witness videos depict a chaotic scene as the mudslide swept through the town, with residents seen running as a massive wave of dirt and debris rushed down the streets.

Highlighting a positive outcome, firefighters are being hailed for rescuing six individuals who were trapped in a camper that was carried downstream by the floodwaters. Prior to the mudslide, Bardonecchia’s tourism agency reported that the town, which has a population of 3,000, was celebrating a local festival. Governor Cirio mentioned in his statement that civil protection teams are on their way to help remove the mud, and experts will assess the hydrogeological condition of a local river. Additionally, gas supply has been shut off to prevent explosions.
