FCC Chair Urges Restoring Obama-Era Net Neutrality Rules for a Fair and Open Internet

In a strategic move, Jessica Rosenworcel, Chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), announced her plans to propose the reinstatement of net neutrality rules previously repealed by former President Trump. This proposal aims to prevent broadband providers such as AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon from blocking or throttling internet traffic to certain websites while prioritizing access to others that pay additional fees.

Rosenworcel’s proposal also seeks to prohibit internet providers from unreasonably interfering or disadvantaging users from freely accessing the content they desire. She highlighted the crucial role of the internet during the pandemic and emphasized the necessity of broadband as essential infrastructure for modern life. Without it, individuals are at a disadvantage and lack equal opportunities for success in the 21st century.

In an effort to break the deadlock between Republican and Democratic commissioners, the FCC recently confirmed Anna Gomez to serve on the commission. With the final spot filled, the stage is set for Rosenworcel to release the full text of the proposal on Thursday and initiate the rulemaking process with a vote in mid-October.

Rosenworcel stressed that the proposed net neutrality rules are largely similar to those approved during the Obama administration. She expressed her belief that the repeal of net neutrality by the FCC in 2017 placed the organization on the wrong side of history, the law, and public opinion. The upcoming proposal aims to correct this misstep and protect the principles of a fair and open internet.
