FBI Director Chris Wray’s Alleged Falsehoods Targeting Catholics: Demanding Answers

FBI Director Christopher Wray is facing serious scrutiny.

During recent Congressional testimony, he claimed that a memo from January 2023, which suggested targeting American citizens who were devout Catholics, was only produced by a single field office – the Richmond field office. However, a newly emerged version of the memo contradicts this statement, revealing that it was actually the product of multiple offices, including Portland and Los Angeles.

Surprisingly, this information was conveniently redacted from the version of the memo Wray presented to the Senate Intelligence Committee in July.

Members of the House Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Mike Johnson (R-La.), are demanding answers from Wray, specifically requesting communications between the field offices involved in creating the memo, as well as information about an agency employee suspected of infiltrating Catholic groups.

Wray, at the time, expressed shock over the memo, stating, “As soon as I found out about it, I was aghast.”

However, he did not take sufficient action to hold every office involved accountable.

Furthermore, his supposed outrage did not prevent him from presenting a deceitfully redacted document to Congress in order to support his narrative.

Let’s examine some of the alleged crimes of the individuals the federal agents wanted to surveil and infiltrate based on their religious beliefs:

  • Expressing disapproval of Pope Francis.
  • Challenging the theological principles of the Second Vatican Council.
  • Criticizing pro-choice advocates on Twitter.

These activities, although controversial, are protected by the First Amendment in America. They should not be grounds for surveillance or infiltration.

Despite this, the FBI issued a weak denial after the new memo came to light and the Judiciary Committee began pressing for answers: “We do not conduct investigations based solely on religious affiliations or practices, or any other First Amendment protected activity.”

However, it is clear from the memo itself that the FBI does engage in such investigations. The evidence is undeniable.

Therefore, it is right for Jordan and Johnson to demand more from Wray.

He must provide comprehensive answers not only to Congress, but to all American citizens.
