Fate Decided for Butcher Who Threw Bow as a Spear at Police on January 6

A professional butcher, whose shockingly intense and blood-stained face became an indelible symbol of the US Capitol riot, has been sentenced to over seven years in prison. The notorious image captured Kyle Fitzsimons, a 39-year-old butcher from Maine, thrusting a bow at police like a deadly spear while violently assaulting multiple officers. Fitzsimons, adorned in a white butcher’s coat embroidered with his first name, unleashed his wrath upon at least five officers near a tunnel, as law enforcement desperately struggled to protect the Capitol from an angry mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters. Prosecutors revealed that Fitzsimons was convicted of 11 charges related to the violent events of January 6, 2021, and was sentenced by US District Judge Rudolph Contreras following a bench trial in September.

According to Judge Contreras, Fitzsimons launched a “frenzied fury” assault, exhibiting an “orgy of assaultive rage” that lasted several minutes. “He was an active participant in the most violent clashes of that day,” remarked Contreras. Fitzsimons expressed remorse toward the officers he attacked, as well as his family, the court, and anyone who was disappointed by his actions. Initially reluctant to acknowledge his potential threat to the nation, Fitzsimons now admits the truth. Prior to learning his sentence, he confessed to the judge, “But now I know it to be true.” Fitzsimons has received a prison term of seven years and three months, along with three years of supervised release. He has been in custody since February 2021 and will receive credit for the two years and five months already served in jail.

Prosecutors had suggested a prison sentence of 15 years and eight months for Fitzsimons, labeling him one of the most violent and aggressive participants in the Capitol riot. They highlighted that he inflicted a shoulder injury on Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell that was both career-ending and life-altering. Fitzsimons traveled from his home in Lebanon, Maine, to Washington, DC, the day before the riot took place. From attending Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally on January 6, he returned to his vehicle, changed attire, and donned his butcher’s coat. Along with the coat, he wore a fur pelt around his neck and carried an unstrung wooden archery bow. In a separate case on Wednesday, Daniel Lyons Scott, a 29-year-old member of the extremist group Proud Boys, known by his nickname “Milkshake,” was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to felony charges, including assault, related to the riot.
