Celebrities’ Double Standards: Promoting Alcohol While Staying Sober

Celebrities are known for their ability to appear to have a good time, but the truth behind their glamorous lives is often much different. Many of them follow strict routines, including early morning workouts and healthy eating habits. Some choose not to drink alcohol due to past partying problems, rehab stints, or their desire to maintain a youthful appearance.

However, in recent times, it seems like the cream of the celebrity crop is embracing the nightlife. They are jumping on the bandwagon of the lucrative alcohol industry, regardless of their own drinking habits. The global alcoholic drinks market is worth a staggering £1,246 billion, making it a tempting venture for these A-listers. Some critics have even questioned the optics of celebrities promoting alcohol brands when they themselves do not drink.

For example, Blake Lively, who does not drink, recently launched Betty Booze, a line of canned cocktails. She explained on Instagram that while drinking is not her thing, she believes in quality drinks and time-saving options. However, some fans saw this move as hypocritical and pointed out a previous comment of Lively’s in which she mentioned not liking the effects of alcohol.

Similarly, Cara Delevingne, who has openly discussed her struggles with alcohol, launched a Prosecco brand called Della Vite with her sisters. Despite her personal battles with alcohol, she appears in photos on the brand’s website toasting with glasses. Jennifer Lopez, another celebrity who has claimed to be teetotal, recently launched Delola, an alcoholic mixed drink, which raised eyebrows considering her husband’s history of rehab.

As a non-drinker, I find these celebrity endorsements questionable. Five years ago, at the age of 47, I chose to give up alcohol not because of a drinking problem, but because it was negatively affecting me. Socially, it was challenging to be a non-drinker, but seeing other middle-aged women in the public eye who were open about their choice to abstain from alcohol gave me inspiration. I hoped that this trend would continue and bring awareness to the fact that many of us drink too much too often.

Fortunately, the trend of alcohol-free drinks has been growing, with more options becoming available. Celebrities like Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry, and Gillian Anderson have also embraced this trend by launching their own alcohol-free brands. However, it is disheartening to see so many stars endorsing alcohol brands when they themselves don’t consume it.

The rise of the “deinfluencing” trend on TikTok reflects a shift in consumer attitudes. Instead of striving for perfection, people are now seeking authenticity and mindful consumption. Influencer culture is losing its appeal, and followers are now more likely to trust recommendations from real people rather than celebrities.

It is clear that celebrities endorsing alcohol brands they don’t drink is a hypocritical move. Thankfully, people are becoming more aware of this, and the influence of celebrities is waning. We no longer blindly invest in the products they promote, recognizing that they may not be living the life they sell. The era of blind influence is thankfully coming to an end.
