Fatal Consequences: Tragic Israeli Shell Incident Claims Journalist’s Life while Injuring 6 Others

A tragic incident occurred during clashes on the border in south Lebanon. An Israeli shell landed in a gathering of international journalists, resulting in the death of Reuters videographer Issam Abdallah and injuring six other journalists. The scene was captured by an AP photographer, who witnessed the body of Abdallah and the wounded journalists being rushed to hospitals for treatment. The Reuters news agency released a statement expressing their deep sadness over the loss of their videographer. Abdallah was part of a Reuters crew providing a live signal from southern Lebanon.

Additional journalists were also injured in the shelling, including two from Reuters, Thaer Al-Sudani and Maher Nazeh, and two from Qatar’s Al-Jazeera TV, Elie Brakhya and reporter Carmen Joukhadar. Two journalists from Agence France-Presse were also wounded, but their names were not released. Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, condemned the shelling and called it an aggression on southern Lebanon. The border area has seen sporadic violence following an attack by the militant Palestinian group Hamas on southern Israel.

The United Nations expressed their concern over the incident and called for an investigation. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that this is just another example of the risks journalists face when covering conflicts around the world. Journalists must be protected and allowed to carry out their work. In response to the tragedy, Lebanon-based journalists and rights activists gathered in Beirut to mourn Abdallah’s death and the injuries sustained by their colleagues. Reuters is actively seeking more information, working with authorities in the region, and providing support to Abdallah’s family and colleagues.
