Aug. 21 (UPI) — Arthur Blank, the owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United, has expanded his portfolio by purchasing a professional golf team in the new venture called TGL. TGL, which was announced on Monday, is led by golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy and incorporates technology into the sport.
Blank’s AMB Sports and Entertainment has secured the rights to a TGL team that will represent Atlanta. This ownership group now includes members from various sports leagues such as NFL, MLB, NHL, MLS, the Premier League, NASCAR, and the NWSL.
“One of our goals in the golf industry is to promote the growth of the game, and AMBSE is dedicated to representing Atlanta to the best of our abilities both on and off the field,” said Blank, who is also the co-founder of Home Depot. “We are excited to partner with TMRW Sports and be a founding owner in TGL.”
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy introduced the new golf league, TGL, in 2022 through their company, TMRW Sports. Blank is the third owner to be announced for the league, which is scheduled to begin playing in January.
“I view this as an investment to expand the game, provide an innovative product for passionate fans, introduce golf to younger audiences, and another opportunity for us to compete for championships in Atlanta,” explained Blank.
“We will give our utmost effort to achieve all three objectives and support TGL in any way we can to ensure success.”
In another significant ownership announcement, Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool soccer club, and Pittsburgh Penguins, revealed on June 26 that they purchased a TGL team based in Boston.
Earlier, on June 8, TGL announced its first team, the Los Angeles Golf Club, owned by Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams. TGL will consist of a total of six competing teams.
TGL events will take place in a specially designed arena at the Palm Beach State College branch in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Twelve PGA Tour players, including Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Justin Thomas, have committed to participating in the league. Each of the six teams will feature three PGA Tour players who will compete in head-to-head and match play events.
TGL’s 15 regular-season matches and playoffs will be broadcasted during prime time in two-hour slots.
