Exposing Westminster’s Hypocrisy: Matt Hancock’s Actions Benefit Us All

England has successfully reached the quarter-final of Euro 2020, coinciding with the resignation of Matt Hancock from his position as health secretary. All of these events have put a smile on the face of Allison Pearson, the host of the Planet Normal podcast, and columnist for The Telegraph. In the latest episode, which can be heard through the audio player above, Pearson discusses with co-host Liam Halligan her positive perspective on Hancock’s resignation. She believes that his actions have exposed the hypocritical double standards that govern our lives and suggests that in the future, the “Hancock exemption” can be cited when faced with challenges.

Liam Halligan, co-pilot of Planet Normal, shares Pearson’s sentiments as he reflects on the flaunting of lockdown rules. He argues that there is a clear division between “us and them”. Whether it’s Hancock engaging in inappropriate behavior during office hours or business executives freely traveling due to their contribution to national wealth, it is ordinary families who bear the brunt. They face doubled or tripled holiday costs and the added inconvenience and uncertainty caused by PCR tests.

Also featured in the podcast is William Clouston, the leader of the Social Democratic Party. He discusses the factors that set his party apart in the closely-followed Batley and Spen by-election and why he believes the Labour Party no longer represents the values of its former supporters.
