Committee member claims King intends to take part in celebrating Windrush through portraits

The King, through his portraits committee members, Bishop Rose Hudson-Wilkin and Paulette Simpson CBE, expressed his desire to be involved in celebrating the remarkable history and achievements of the Windrush pioneers. In an interview conducted at the Berkshire racecourse, Bishop Rose and Paulette discussed the 10 portraits commissioned by His Majesty to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Windrush generation, which have now become a part of the Royal Collection. The King officially unveiled the portraits yesterday, and they were also displayed on electric screens at Ascot.

The 74-year-old monarch expressed his sincere hope that this project will serve as a reminder of the diverse threads that make up our society, each consisting of stories of courage, sacrifice, determination, and strength. The Windrush generation’s 75th anniversary was celebrated at Royal Ascot this week, and in the interview, Bishop Rose and Paulette discussed the significance of the portraits. Bishop Rose emphasized the importance of recognizing the Windrush pioneers as true pioneers, not simply as part of a broad celebration. She acknowledged their significant contribution to the rebuilding of Britain and the unfortunate tendency of the nation to forget their efforts, leading to a sense of not belonging. Windrush Day, observed on June 22nd, serves as a national reminder to honor their contributions.

Bishop Rose also mentioned the special service that took place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, attended by King Charles. Paulette noted that she felt the Monarch’s genuine desire to be involved in acknowledging, celebrating, and preserving the history of the Windrush pioneers. Bishop Rose emphasized the vital role of the King’s involvement in remembering the Windrush generation and expressed gratitude for his interest and support. She emphasized the interconnectedness of the Windrush generations and their descendants with Britain, commending the King for his willingness to learn and connect with all his people.

Yesterday, King Charles proudly unveiled the portraits he commissioned, acknowledging the immeasurable contribution of the Windrush generation to the UK. The exhibition will be displayed at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, His Majesty’s official residence in Edinburgh. The subjects of the portraits were carefully chosen by the Windrush Portraits Committee, chaired by Baroness Floella Benjamin. The exhibition, titled ‘Windrush: Portraits of a Pioneering Generation,’ pays tribute to the men and women who arrived from the Caribbean on the HMT Empire Windrush in 1948. In the foreword to the accompanying book, the King stated the importance of recognizing and celebrating the unparalleled contributions of the Windrush pioneers to the country.

The ten portraits, which depict individuals in their 80s and 90s, including RAF veterans, members of the Learie Constantine West Indian Association, and actress Carmen Munroe OBE, among others, will be honored as part of the official Royal Collection. Personally selected by the King, the portraits were created by black artists. They will be displayed on billboards and shopping center screens across the UK for two weeks.

During a reception at Buckingham Palace, King Charles met the ten individuals who had their portraits painted. The event was attended by notable guests such as BBC News anchor Clive Myrie, whose parents were part of the Windrush generation, veteran journalist Sir Trevor McDonald, former Loose Women panelist June Sarpong, and Jamaican-born entrepreneur Levi Roots.

The Empire Windrush arrived on June 22, 1948, carrying individuals from the Caribbean in response to an advertisement offering £28 tickets to those seeking work in the UK.
