Explosions Cause Fatality at Two Different Sites Housing Explosives

A significant explosion occurred at a fireworks warehouse in southern Thailand, resulting in at least nine fatalities and numerous injuries. According to the governor of Narathiwat province, Sanan Pongaksorn, around 115 individuals were wounded, with many in critical condition. As a precautionary measure, approximately 500 to 800 nearby residents may need to be relocated to a temporary shelter. The cause of the explosion is believed to be related to construction work being performed in the warehouse and the ignition of stored fireworks due to flares caused by metal welding.

Videos shared on social media reveal a massive plume of smoke engulfing the area, causing severe damage to structures, vehicles, and motorcycles, as well as leaving streets covered in debris. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported approximately 100 residences in the vicinity also experienced damage. Many of the affected buildings have collapsed roofs and walls. Authorities suspect that the explosion at the firecracker factory in southern India, which claimed the lives of eight individuals and injured several others, may have been caused by a similar incident. Rescuers, police, and firefighters swiftly responded to the scene.

Firecrackers are in high demand in India, particularly for religious festivals and weddings. Unfortunately, due to the absence of proper safety standards, accidents occur frequently in makeshift factories. In 2018, a massive fire at a firecracker factory in New Delhi claimed the lives of 17 workers. The year prior, 23 workers lost their lives in a blast while manufacturing firecrackers in a village in Madhya Pradesh. Firecracker production begins months in advance of the nation’s major Hindu festivals when they are used for celebrations.
