Exploring the Affordability and Importance of Military Aid to Israel and Ukraine: Insights from Yellen

In an interview with Britain’s Sky News, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated that the United States can “certainly” afford to provide military aid to Israel in its conflict with Hamas and Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Yellen emphasized the importance of supporting both countries while urging caution to minimize civilian casualties.

Yellen also mentioned that Israel’s war with Hamas and Ukraine’s situation are a priority for the U.S., and funds need to be allocated for both countries. President Biden had already dismissed the notion that the U.S. cannot support both of these conflicts in a recent “60 Minutes” interview, highlighting the impact of these conflicts on American safety and national defense.

While there is agreement in Washington on the need to continue supporting Ukraine, House Republicans have shown skepticism, with complications arising from the ongoing chaos surrounding the Speaker position. Some Republicans have opposed the White House’s request for additional Ukraine aid, arguing that the funds should be used for domestic matters.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in thousands of casualties on both sides. Yellen also called on the U.S. House to select a new Speaker after the removal of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). However, no Republican candidate has been able to secure the necessary votes to assume the position.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (La.) initially won the Republican nomination but later dropped out due to difficulty in obtaining the required support. Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio) then emerged as the nominee, focusing on the unity of the House GOP conference to support Israel.

Democrats, led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), emphasized the importance of addressing domestic issues while standing with Israel against the terrorist organization Hamas. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also expressed his commitment to providing significant assistance to Israel, stating that the Senate will not wait for the House to act.
