Explaining the Teaser of the Finale Character in Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ Ending

Netflix’s “One Piece” season one finale leaves viewers with a tantalizing clue about what’s to come. Just before the credits roll, there is a character tease that hints at the direction of season two. While the show has not yet been renewed, this tease gives us a glimpse of the possibilities.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for season one of Netflix’s “One Piece” and parts of the manga’s Arabasta Saga.

In the pre-credits teaser, we see Smoker, a Marine with Devil Fruit powers, briefly appear. Smoker is shown sitting at a desk, surrounded by smoke. He places a stone on top of a stack and then rubs his lit cigar into Luffy’s bounty poster, setting it on fire. This teaser alludes to Captain “White Chase” Smoker, a Marine that Luffy and his crew encounter after defeating Arlong. Smoker possesses the Plume-Plume Fruit, which grants him the ability to transform parts of his body into smoke and control it. He often carries cigars and uses a weapon tipped with Seastone, which can weaken those with Devil Fruit powers.

Smoker’s appearance suggests that season two of “One Piece” may follow the Manga’s Arabasta Saga. In this arc, Smoker pursues the Straw Hats onto the Grand Line and reluctantly teams up with them to stop Crocodile from taking over Arabasta. However, while Smoker is an exciting character, there are others that could have generated even more excitement if teased.

For example, the Arabasta saga introduces Tony Tony Chopper, the crew’s doctor who is a reindeer-human hybrid. Chopper ate the Human-Human Devil Fruit, granting him sentience and the ability to transform into an adorable creature. Teasing Chopper would have required significant visual effects work and poses a challenge for the live-action adaptation. Another option would have been to tease Nico Robin, a character who plays a major role in the Arabasta arc and the broader “One Piece” story. She has powerful abilities thanks to the Flower-Flower Devil Fruit. Luffy’s brother, Portgas D. Ace, who possesses the Flame-Flame Devil Fruit, would also have been an exciting choice.

Ultimately, the decision to renew the show and introduce these characters lies with Netflix. Fans can only hope to see them in a potential season two.
