Experts Call for ‘One-Stop Shop’ Prostate Cancer Tests Similar to Breast Cancer

Medical experts are advocating for the implementation of a ‘one-stop shop’ approach to prostate cancer testing, similar to the services available for breast cancer patients.
A successful pilot scheme in London demonstrated that the diagnostic process for prostate cancer could be significantly shortened by streamlining appointments for men suspected to have the disease.
Under this scheme, men were offered the option of receiving an MRI scan with same-day results, and in some cases, a same-day biopsy if necessary.
A study conducted on 2,130 men using this one-stop approach revealed that they received a prostate cancer diagnosis or were cleared of the disease in just under 16 days after being referred by their GP. In contrast, patients who underwent the traditional multi-appointment approach had to wait close to 32 days for results.
Despite the success of the ‘one-stop shop’ option that is readily available for women with suspected breast cancer, experts warn that the implementation for prostate cancer testing is lagging behind.
