Experimental Cancer Drug May Reduce Inflammation Related to Heart Disease, According to Study

A new study has revealed that an experimental cancer drug, saracatinib, may have a positive impact on inflammation which is linked to heart disease. The study was conducted by the New York University Grossman School of Medicine and details can be found in a report published in the journal Nature Cardiovascular Research. The buildup of fatty deposits in blood vessels, a condition known as atherosclerosis, is a primary cause of inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of saracatinib showed promising results during the testing stage, with inflammation reduced by over 90% in human blood samples and diseased tissue samples. There is currently no effective treatment for persistent inflammation which can lead to heart attacks and strokes, however, the researchers found that saracatinib blocked gene activity responsible for producing inflammatory proteins such as interleukin-1 beta and interleukin-6. The drug is already being tested as a potential treatment for cancer, lung and Alzheimer’s disease. The study’s senior author, Dr. Chiara Giannarelli, commented that their “reverse-engineering method of finding new uses for old drugs can in theory be harnessed to uncover therapies for practically any disease that involves inflammation.”
