The adoption of new technologies, including body-worn cameras (BWC) and facial recognition technology (FRT), has faced opposition from those who oppose any form of technology to aid law enforcement in their duties. However, it is important to note that all technologies have challenges that need to be regulated for security and safety. Companies across the world are already using FRT for workplace security and employee identification, improving customer service and preventing theft and fraud in a more reliable way than biometric or manual identification. Instead of outright rejection, a pilot program for FRT usage at points of entry to the country, with annual reviews and qualified oversight, could be a positive step towards tackling international and national criminality and terrorism. While some may argue against these technologies, millions of ordinary people around the globe are already uploading their body and facial features daily without any negative debate. Moving onto public art, while Michael Collins is already widely honoured in Cork, putting a new statue of him on a bike on Grand Parade would be daft as it is out of time and place for a city that should define itself in terms of music (as “Cork, a city of Song”). Instead, Cork should honour other poignant people like Seán Ó Riada, Aloys Fleischmann, Cara O’Sullivan, Joan Denise Moriarty, Rory Gallagher, Jim Mountjoy, and The Dixies. Similarly, Siamsa Tíre, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland, should be given the recognition they deserve for their contributions to the community, both in terms of economic and cultural benefits. Lastly, there are no two ways around it; it is important to remember the hardships that our ancestors faced when they emigrated (or were forced to do so) and to use that knowledge to be more receptive to current refugees arriving in Ireland.
