MANILA, Philippines — Chery Tiggo Crossovers are banking on their star recruits, Eya Laure and Imee Hernandez, to lead them to victory in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference.

In the Invitational Conference, Chery Tiggo made significant moves by acquiring Eya Laure from the University of Santo Tomas and Imee Hernandez as their middle blocker. They also added Cess Robles, Joyme Cagande, and Jennifer Nierva from National University.

However, their successful recruitment did not result in a strong showing in the midseason conference, where the Crossovers finished seventh after winning only two out of five matches.

Assistant coach KungFu Reyes said that they utilized the three-month preparation period to help their rookies adapt to the professional play in the PVL.

“Moving from being a top player in college to being a rookie again in the professional league can be challenging. The competition is tougher, and they are now playing against the players they used to look up to,” Reyes told reporters.

“Hopefully, they have gained valuable experience in the league and have adapted to coach Aaron’s system at Chery,” he added.

Chery Tiggo is also focused on maintaining their players’ health as they compete against 11 teams in a single round-robin elimination format. Unlike in the Invitational Conference, the team had a longer preparation period after the UAAP Season 85.

“Last conference, we struggled with conditioning due to the late end of the UAAP. This time, we prioritized the recovery and conditioning of our players. We want to stay healthy from start to finish and put up a good fight,” Reyes said.

After Foton’s withdrawal from the PVL, Shaya Adorador and Jasmine Nabor join Chery Tiggo’s veteran players Mylene Paat, Pauline Gaston, Alina Bicar, EJ Laure, and Buding Duremdes to guide the rookies.

“Our team is more solid now with the addition of Shaya and Jasmine, who had the opportunity to develop their leadership skills in Foton. We also have a deeper bench with role players, and they will definitely guide and push our young players. It’s a huge advantage for us to have our core players back,” Reyes said.

Chery Tiggo, the 2021 PVL champion with Jaja Santiago, will kick off their season-ending campaign against Farm Fresh on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
