In a groundbreaking development, around 20 witnesses to the Kabul airport bombing in August 2021, as US forces were leaving Afghanistan, will finally have the opportunity to recount their experiences to investigators from the Pentagon. General Michael Kurilla, the head of US Central Command, ordered the interviews of US personnel who were injured in the attack, after their public statements contradicted the Pentagon’s conclusion that the bombing was unavoidable. Vargas-Andrews expressed his frustration, stating, “Plain and simple, we were ignored. Our expertise was disregarded. No one was held accountable for our safety.” It is important to note, however, that conducting additional interviews does not imply the reopening of the investigation, according to officials.
