Exciting News: Biden Administration Announces Free Covid Tests for At-Home Use Returning Next Week

Starting next week, individuals will once again have the opportunity to request four complimentary Covid tests from the government, according to an announcement made by the Biden administration on Wednesday.

The Department of Health and Human Services revealed that it will reopen its website COVIDTests.gov on September 25. Households can simply place an order for the tests, which will be delivered to their homes free of charge.

This announcement comes in response to the increasing number of Covid cases in the United States. Moreover, many individuals have discovered that their previously owned tests have expired. However, it is advisable to check the expiration date for the newly ordered tests upon arrival. Last year, there were reports of individuals receiving tests that were on the brink of expiration.

To determine whether the expiration date on their tests has been extended, people can access the Food and Drug Administration’s website. Additionally, the mailed tests will include instructions on how to check for extended expiration dates.

The relaunch of the free Covid test program was coupled with a $600 million investment in 12 American manufacturers of Covid tests.

“Manufacturing Covid-19 tests in the United States strengthens our preparedness for the upcoming fall and winter seasons, reduces our reliance on other countries, and provides good jobs to hardworking Americans,” stated Dawn O’Connell, assistant secretary for preparedness and response.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendations, individuals should seek immediate testing if they experience Covid symptoms or if they have been in contact with someone who has Covid within the past five days.

The Biden administration initially initiated the distribution of free Covid tests in January 2022 during the first surge of the Omicron variant. The program was reintroduced last winter.

COVIDTests.gov will remain operational until the end of the year.
