Exciting News: Adam Wainwright to Rest Instead of Starting against Padres

ST. LOUIS — Adam Wainwright, the veteran right-hander for the Cardinals, achieved his 200th career win in a memorable performance on Monday. Manager Oliver Marmol announced that Wainwright will only pitch at Busch Stadium for the remainder of the season, if he pitches again at all.

In his best outing of 2023, the 42-year-old Wainwright threw seven scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and two walks in a 1-0 victory over the Brewers. This win solidified his place in Cardinals history as the third pitcher in franchise history to reach 200 wins and one of only five active MLB pitchers to achieve this milestone.

Due to shoulder pain and a back injury, Wainwright will not take his normal turn in the rotation during the upcoming series against the Padres. If he does pitch again, it will be during the final home series against the Reds at the end of September.

“We’ve decided that he will not take the start in San Diego,” said Marmol. “We’ll discuss how to finish the season, but we haven’t made a decision on whether Wainwright will pitch again.”

Wainwright expressed his excitement about the possibility of pitching in front of the home crowd again, following his remarkable performance.

The Cardinals are currently playing a home series against the Brewers before embarking on a road trip to San Diego and Milwaukee. With no chance of making the playoffs this season, they will conclude the 2023 campaign with three home games against the Reds.

Wainwright’s 200th victory came in a historic 1-0 decision, making him the first player in MLB history to achieve this feat. At the age of 42, he also became the oldest Cardinals pitcher to throw seven scoreless innings, beating the previous record set by Jim Kaat.

When asked about the text messages he received after his milestone win, Wainwright mentioned a message from Reds Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench.

There is a possibility that Wainwright could make another appearance for the Cardinals as a designated hitter or a pinch-hitter, something he has been advocating for throughout the season. In his career, Wainwright has been a solid hitter with 10 home runs and 75 RBIs.

When asked if Wainwright had been persistently requesting at-bats, Marmol jokingly replied, “That’s what [Wainwright] does. We will see [if it happens].”

Wainwright, who has 108 wins with the Cardinals, is scheduled to hold a postgame concert at Busch Stadium on September 30th. Known for his passion for country music, Wainwright is working on an upcoming album and surprised fans by singing the national anthem on Opening Day.
