MANILA, Philippines—In a thrilling start to the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament, host Jose Rizal University (JRU) stunned defending champion Letran, with a score of 85-79 in overtime. This unexpected victory gave JRU a strong foundation for their campaign.
The Heavy Bombers displayed remarkable composure in overtime, causing Letran’s pursuit of a fourth consecutive championship to falter from the very beginning.
“During the fourth quarter, we were confident that we had secured the win. However, it ended up being reminiscent of last season’s game. We were leading by three points, and Letran hit a three-pointer. I was surprised by that,” stated forward Agem Miranda, who contributed 17 points to the victory.
Miranda added, “I immediately thought, ‘Here we go again.’ But when we entered overtime, I was determined that history wouldn’t repeat itself. We had to change the outcome. We needed to win this time.”
