Empowering Change: Celebrating Karen Davila as the Philippines’ First UN Women Goodwill Ambassador

Karen Davila, an esteemed broadcast journalist, is proud to announce her official appointment as the United Nations (UN) Women Asia Pacific goodwill ambassador for the Philippines. Joining the ranks of other celebrity goodwill ambassadors like Emma Watson and Anne Hathaway, Davila shared the news on her Instagram account, where she was welcomed by UN Women Asia Pacific Regional director Alia El-Yassir at the organization’s headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand.

In her Instagram post, Davila expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome she received at the UN Women Asia Pacific office. She also highlighted her passion for women empowerment and mentioned the various issues that the international organization covers, including climate change, ending violence against women, women’s economic empowerment, women’s role in governance, peace and security, and unpaid care. Drawing from her 30 years of experience as a broadcast journalist, Davila shared her commitment to advocating for women and girls’ rights and emphasized the importance of educating girls and empowering mothers as a means to uplift families out of poverty.

Davila mentioned that she will be working closely with UN Women champions and advocates to promote women empowerment and inspire change in mindsets, behavior, and everyday lives. She revealed that the final meeting will take place in October at the UN headquarters in New York, proudly representing her Filipino heritage.

El-Yassir, in her warm welcome message, expressed her excitement about having Davila as the Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women in the Philippines. She looks forward to working with Davila to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment.

UN Women, also known as the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, is dedicated to promoting women empowerment and establishing a safe environment that fosters gender equality. Alongside Watson, Hathaway, Kidman, Gurira, Vieira da Silva, Akhtar, Evgar, and Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand, Davila joins the esteemed list of personalities who have been honored with this role.
