Exciting Dealer Network Revamp by MG Motor Prior to Collaboration with Sajjan Jindal Co.

MG Motor India is planning a revamp of its dealership network, which involves the closure of underperforming dealerships and the opening of new ones in different locations. This move comes ahead of a potential partnership between its Chinese parent company and a private firm owned by JSW Group chairman Sajjan Jindal, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Last week, the automaker assured its dealers that its Indian operations and the MG brand will sustain even after the deal. In its communication to the dealers, the company also mentioned its plans to introduce new models, variants, and expand overall capacity. A spokesperson for MG Motor India stated, “Customers are our top priority at MG India. We are exploring various avenues for growth and expansion in the country, and network development is a crucial part of our strategy. By December 2023, we aim to strengthen our presence from 330 touchpoints in 158 cities to 400 touchpoints in 270 cities.”

The spokesperson declined to comment on capacity expansion plans and discussions with dealers, stating that such questions are speculative.

China’s SAIC Motor and Sajjan Jindal are in the final stages of forming their partnership. An announcement involving MG Motor India, the wholly-owned subsidiary of the Shanghai-based automaker that owns the British brand Morris Garages, and a private firm led by Sajjan Jindal is expected to be made later this month or around the time of Diwali, as reported by ET on October 5.
