Get ready for an exciting Catfish Derby happening this Saturday at Lake Cahuilla in La Quinta! Over 2,000 pounds of catfish have been added to the lake, creating an incredible fishing experience.
“With the weather cooling down, we saw this as a perfect opportunity to celebrate Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park by organizing a free fishing derby for the community,” said Riverside County Supervisor V. Manuel Perez.
The derby will kick off at 4 p.m. on Saturday, offering prizes for the heaviest catfish caught in both adult and children’s divisions.
Please note that due to the fish stocking, fishing will be closed at the park until 4 p.m. on Saturday when the fishing derby starts, as announced by the Riverside County Regional Park and Open Space District.
Just yesterday, the lake was stocked with 1,500 pounds of catfish, thanks to a generous grant from Perez, as well as a donation of 500 pounds from Yellow Mart. This amounts to a total value of $2,200. The last stock of catfish was on September 1, with 900 pounds.
“With such a large number of fish being stocked at Lake Cahuilla, there will be an abundance of fish for the derby and for future anglers visiting the lake,” Perez explained. “Bring your family and enjoy a wonderful time at this beautiful spot in our valley.”
The park will be open for recreational fishing until 9 p.m. on Saturday. Both admission and derby entries are free for everyone who wants to visit and fish, according to the supervisor. Fishing licenses are mandatory for individuals over the age of 16 and can be purchased from local retailers or online.
The Catfish Derby is a joint effort by Perez, the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District, and the Desert Recreation District.
