Tens of thousands of Kaiser Permanente workers are keeping their strike alive for a second day due to failed negotiations surrounding a short-staffing crisis within healthcare facilities.

The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions spokesperson stated that this strike, considered the largest healthcare worker walkout in U.S. history, will continue until at least Saturday morning. The group anticipates a meaningful response from Kaiser executives to its demands.

According to spokesperson Caroline Lucas, there are currently no scheduled bargaining sessions with Kaiser.

Over 75,000 workers went on strike on Wednesday across numerous Kaiser Permanente health facilities in California, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington state. Of these, nearly 60,000 workers are in California.

In Washington, D.C. and Virginia, Kaiser Permanente employees originally struck for one day and returned to work on Thursday. However, they plan to continue the strike through Saturday morning in the remaining four states unless Kaiser executives address the short-staffing crisis.

Due to the strike, operations, chemotherapy treatments, and other “non-urgent” procedures were postponed on Wednesday, as reported by NBC News.

Kaiser Permanente assured that all hospitals and emergency departments would remain open during the strike, but elective procedures might need to be rescheduled.
