Soneva Fushi, an idyllic resort located on the private Kunfunadhoo Island in the Maldives, understands the annoyance and potential health risks that come with mosquitoes. These pesky insects can carry diseases like malaria, dengue, and zika, which can put a damper on any holiday experience.
To combat this problem, Soneva Fushi has partnered with the Germany-based company Biogents to develop a groundbreaking solution for mosquito control. Traditional methods, including chemical-based insecticides, proved ineffective and had adverse effects on the island’s biodiversity. Instead, Soneva Fushi has implemented an eco-friendly mosquito elimination system using Biogents’ innovative traps.
The resort first introduced the Biogents system in 2019, placing over 500 traps around the island to target different types of mosquitoes. The traps use environmentally friendly attractants like carbon dioxide and lactic acid to mimic human scent, drawing in and containing the bugs without the need for harmful chemicals.
The results have been remarkable, with Soneva Fushi reporting a staggering 98% decrease in the mosquito population within the first year of implementing the Biogents traps. Not only have they effectively eliminated the mosquitoes, but they have also seen a resurgence of native insects and wildlife, resulting in a flourishing ecosystem on the island.
However, Soneva Fushi’s efforts extend beyond their own property. They have gifted mosquito traps to Parliament in Malé, the Maldives’ capital, and have trained staff on how to use them. Their commitment to sustainability and biodiversity has set a new standard for other resorts to follow suit.
By pioneering eco-friendly and sustainable methods for addressing mosquito-related issues, Soneva Fushi aims to become the first mosquito-free island in the Maldives. Their success and the positive impact on the local ecosystem serve as an inspiration for other resorts to take similar steps in creating a healthier, pest-free environment for locals and visitors alike.
