End of an Era in California Politics as Anthony Rendon Steps Down from the Speaker’s Gavel – Orange County Register

Editor’s note: Welcome to Sacramento Snapshot, a weekly series that provides an in-depth look at the activities of Orange County’s representatives in the Assembly and Senate during the legislative session.

Anthony Rendon’s time as Speaker may have come to an end, but his work as a legislator is far from over. Though he passed on the speaker’s gavel last Friday, Rendon still has plenty to contribute. As a legislator, he will continue to attend committee hearings, potentially author legislation, but allow new Speaker Robert Rivas to take the reins in caucus meetings.

Rendon’s tenure as speaker has been historic, making him California’s second-longest-serving speaker. During his time in leadership, he navigated through significant events and challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the #MeToo movement, and political changes at the national level. He empowered committee chairs to take on more responsibility in crafting legislation, distinguishing himself from previous speakers who authored numerous bills themselves.

In reflecting on his time as speaker, Rendon emphasized the importance of making moral decisions and simplifying complex issues to determine the right course of action. Looking ahead, he plans to focus on oversight work and resume his role as a legislator, which he enjoyed for its differences from his previous experiences in the nonprofit sector.

Last week, two bills related to education, from Orange County lawmakers, were signed into law by the governor. Assemblymember Tri Ta’s legislation requires school districts to notify nearby community colleges about college and career fairs, aiming to strengthen connections between K-12 education and higher education institutions during a time of declining enrollment in the state’s community college system. Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva’s bill updates California statute to ensure that teaching credential programs for braille instructional aides are properly identified, addressing the teacher shortage crisis in special education.
