Empowering South Jersey Sisters: Shedding Light on Early Detection Breast Cancer Screenings

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins in October, with a focus on early detection and improved treatments to save lives. Currently, there are over four million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. The American Cancer Society has launched the “Grab Your Girls” campaign, which emphasizes the importance of holding friends and family accountable for mammograms. Two South Jersey sisters, Charmella and Kiki Roark, who both battled breast cancer, are sharing their story to support this campaign.

Charmella Roark was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer, just four years after her sister Kiki. Despite being told by three doctors that her lump was nothing to worry about, Kiki insisted on having a mammogram at the age of 37. She emphasizes the need for women to be advocates for their own health and listen to their bodies.

Throughout their treatments, the Roark sisters provided support and guidance to each other, navigating the physical and emotional challenges of breast cancer. Now, they are proud to be part of the American Cancer Society’s “Grab Your Girls” campaign, urging women to encourage one another to schedule regular screenings.

Charmella Roark emphasizes the importance of supporting loved ones through the scary experience of breast cancer. Kiki Roark encourages everyone to spread the message and ensure that their friends and family prioritize mammograms. Mammograms are still considered the best method for early detection of breast cancer, and the American Cancer Society recommends starting screenings at age 45.

According to Karen Knudsen of the American Cancer Society, a combination of early detection and improved treatments has led to a 43% reduction in breast cancer rates. The Roark sisters are now focused on helping other women and maintaining their own health. They will be participating in the 25th Annual Making Strides of Greater Philadelphia Walk, which will take place at Cooper River Park Jack Curtis Stadium on October 15th at 8:30 a.m.
