Eminem Issues Cease-and-Desist Letter to Vivek Ramaswamy, Urging Him to Cease Performing “Lose Yourself”

Rapper Eminem has issued a cease-and-desist letter to GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, demanding that he stop using Eminem’s hit song “Lose Yourself” during his campaign events.

Ramaswamy was captured passionately rapping along to the song while campaigning at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines in mid-August. This caught the attention of music licenser BMI, who sent a letter to Ramaswamy’s campaign lawyer on Aug. 23, objecting to the use of Eminem’s music in the campaign.

Variety reported on Monday that BMI’s letter stated, “BMI will consider any performance of the Eminem Works by the Vivek 2024 campaign from this date forward to be a material breach of the Agreement for which BMI reserves all rights and remedies with respect thereto.”

In an interview with The New York Times on Aug. 19, Ramaswamy acknowledged that he didn’t grow up in the same circumstances as Eminem but identified with the underdog mentality portrayed in the song.

Ramaswamy, the youngest candidate in the Republican presidential field, is a Biotech CEO who launched his campaign in late February. Recent polls show him in third place.
