A North Carolina animal shelter has gone into lockdown after multiple dogs died from canine influenza.

Three dogs have died, forcing Wake County Animal Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, to close Friday for at least 35 days to contain the outbreak.

As of Thursday, approximately 57 dogs exhibited upper respiratory infections, indicating an unusually high number of cases.

Canine influenza, or dog flu, is highly contagious and spreads through barking and sneezing.

It is important to note that dog flu does not transfer to humans, which allows the shelter workers to continue caring for the 449 animals without the risk of contracting the illness. There have been no reported cases of dog-to-human transmission of flu.

Jennifer Federico, a veterinarian who manages the animal shelter, stated, “Unfortunately, this outbreak has spread rapidly. Most dogs are not immune to it, as it is not a commonly vaccinated condition.”
