Emails raise questions about whether Mendicino was aware of Bernardo transfer

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino expressed his outrage on social media following the transfer of notorious serial killer Paul Bernardo to a medium-security prison. A few days later, Anne Kelly, the commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada, reached out to Mendicino to discuss the situation further. The emails discussing the transfer and Mendicino’s knowledge of it were recently released to the public.

Mendicino and his staff have faced criticism in recent weeks as more details about the transfer came to light. The opposition Conservative party has called for Mendicino’s resignation. Bernardo, also known as the “Schoolgirl Killer,” is serving a life sentence for his heinous crimes committed in the early 1990s. The transfer of Bernardo to a different institution was initially met with shock and disbelief.

Mendicino took to Twitter to express his concerns and demanded that the correctional service prioritize the well-being of the victims in such cases. It was later revealed that Mendicino’s office was informed about the possibility of the transfer months in advance. Kelly reached out to Mendicino directly to clarify the communication surrounding the transfer.

Despite the controversy surrounding Mendicino’s knowledge of the transfer, he maintains that he was not intentionally kept in the dark. He has since announced plans to issue a directive to ensure that the public safety minister is informed about such transfers directly in the future.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has called for stricter measures regarding the treatment of multiple murderers like Bernardo, insisting that they should remain in maximum-security prisons for the duration of their sentences. The Liberal government, on the other hand, is cautious about interfering with the independence of the correctional service.

The review of Bernardo’s transfer is still ongoing, and the families of the victims have expressed their desire for the decision to be reversed. The Correctional Service of Canada has yet to provide an update on the review process. The Canadian Press has reached out to relevant parties for comment but has not received a response at this time.
