El Salvador’s Entire Region Enclosed in Boundaries

With the aim of curbing gang activity, the government of El Salvador has deployed police officers and soldiers to encircle an entire region. This strategy not only intends to disrupt the supply chains of gangs but also prevent gang members from escaping the region, according to the BBC. President Nayib Bukele announced the establishment of a security fence around the rural province of Cabañas, stating that it is now the region with the highest concentration of terrorists seeking refuge in rural areas. This extensive operation aims to ensure the safety of the area and will persist until all criminals are apprehended.

El Salvador is widely recognized as one of the world’s most dangerous countries, prompting Bukele to declare his crackdown on gangs last year. He alleges that members of the MS-13 and Barrio 18 gangs have sought refuge in rural areas to evade law enforcement. This particular operation marks the fifth large-scale raid since Bukele’s announcement in 2022 and is regarded as one of the most significant endeavors to date. Approximately 1% of the country’s population, which amounts to nearly 72,000 individuals, have been detained and accused of gang affiliation. However, human rights concerns have been raised as critics argue that as few as 30% of those apprehended have any substantiated connections to organized crime. Additionally, there are concerns about prison conditions and the potential for mass trials to be carried out.
