Eiffel Tower Jumper Detained by Authorities

A man managed to parachute off the Eiffel Tower early Thursday, despite the efforts of security personnel. However, he was apprehended after successfully landing on the roof of a Paris sports center. Police quickly spotted the jumper less than a minute after he arrived at the tower. He then climbed a column and made the leap. The company responsible for managing the tower filed a complaint against this “irresponsible action” that puts the safety of those who work on or under the structure at risk, as reported by CNN. The tower’s opening at 9am was delayed due to this incident.

The Eiffel Tower’s security team has had a busy week. On Monday, two security personnel discovered two US tourists sleeping in an area prohibited to the public. Additionally, two bomb threats were posted online, leading to the evacuation of the tower for several hours on Saturday. Although Parisian police stations received more bomb threats on Monday, the Eiffel Tower was not evacuated. Sadly, this summer has witnessed destructive behavior from tourists, causing damage to iconic sites such as the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. According to experts cited by the Washington Post, this issue can be attributed to a decline in civility, increased tourism, a sense of entitlement, and the influence of social media.
