Ajax Reach Agreement to Sign Chuba Akpom for £12m from Middlesbrough
Ajax have reached an agreement with Middlesbrough to sign striker Chuba Akpom for a fee of £12 million. The Dutch club has beaten competition from Sheffield United and Lens to secure the player’s signature.
The 27-year-old Akpom is scheduled to undergo a medical examination in Holland on Monday.
Akpom, who previously played for Arsenal’s youth team, joined Greek side PAOK in 2018 before returning to the UK to join Middlesbrough in 2020.
During his time at Middlesbrough, Akpom scored 34 goals in 82 appearances across all competitions, with 28 goals coming in the championship last season. He has not featured in pre-season under Michael Carrick’s management.
Although Akpom was on the bench for Middlesbrough’s Championship opener against Millwall, he did not make an appearance. Lens had offered £8 million to secure his services, hoping to beat Sheffield United in signing him.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough is close to finalizing a £4 million deal for Ivory Coast striker Emmanuel Latte Lath from Atalanta. Latte Lath, a product of Atalanta’s youth academy, spent the previous season on loan at FC St Gallen, scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances for the Swiss side. He also scored in Atalanta’s pre-season victory against Bournemouth.
