Ducks’ Rivalry Win Propels Them to Championship Game

EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon football team still has more left in the tank and two major objectives to achieve in the 2023 season. The Ducks’ impressive 31-7 victory over No. 16 Oregon State has secured a spot for them in the Pac-12 Championship. This win marked their fourth 11-win regular season in school history, before a crowd of 59,987 fans. Now, the Ducks (11-1, 8-1 Pac-12) are set to compete for the conference title against Washington next Friday in Las Vegas, the team responsible for their only loss this season.

Friday’s triumph not only keeps the UO football team in contention for a Pac-12 title but also boosts their position in the College Football Playoff race. Senior quarterback Bo Nix demonstrated his Heisman Trophy credentials by completing 33-of-40 passes for 367 yards, two touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown, leading the Ducks to their sixth straight win.

UO coach Dan Lanning expressed, “I’ve said all season, we want to be playing our best football at the end of the season. We are right now.”

Looking to avenge a loss to Oregon State the year before, Oregon limited their opponent to just one touchdown, keeping a tight grip on their lead throughout the game. Troy Franklin showcased his prowess with nine receptions for 128 yards and a score, while Tez Johnson contributed 11 receptions for 137 yards. Bucky Irving and Jordan James also made key contributions to the team’s victory.

Evan Williams spearheaded the UO defense, holding Oregon State’s rushing attack to just 53 yards on 24 carries. Notably, freshman edge rusher Matayo Uiagalelei secured a crucial sack.

Dontae Manning’s interception in the end zone thwarted the Beavers’ attempt to score, highlighting the team’s collective effort and determination.

Before the game, a special ceremony honored the senior class, including the late tight end Spencer Webb. The team celebrated a methodical opening drive, with Nix throwing a touchdown pass to Irving. Nix then extended the lead with a 16-yard rushing touchdown. The Ducks’ defense maintained its dominance, allowing only a single touchdown from the Beavers.

Oregon’s victory symbolized a collective effort and a relentless drive to achieve greatness, setting the stage for an exciting showdown in the upcoming Pac-12 Championship.
