Toyota Research Institute sees room for human touch

Toyota robots

LOS ALTOS, Calif. — A humanoid robot faces challenges while navigating a mock grocery store inside the Toyota Research Institute laboratory.

The robot needs to locate items from its shopping list and know how to move within the store. Additionally, it must determine the weight and packaging of each product.

When choosing which method to use for grabbing an object, such as a milk jug, the robot must decide between using the pincers on its right arm or the vacuum-based suction tube on its left hand to place the product in the cart.

The robotics industry is experiencing significant growth. Boston Consulting Group predicts that annual market sales will increase from $40 billion to $160 billion to $260 billion by 2030. However, Max Bajracharya, senior vice president of robotics at the Toyota Research Institute, compares this optimism to the hype surrounding robotaxis a decade ago. He believes that there is a need for underlying technologies that make robots both reliable and practical in real-world scenarios.
