A recent court ruling has shed light on the issue of censorship by the Biden administration. Dr Jay Bhattacharya, an outspoken critic of lockdown policies, was silenced for challenging the government’s actions. The ruling stated that the administration coerced social media sites to censor him and other dissenters who criticized efforts to shut down the economy and schools.

Dr Bhattacharya, a renowned epidemiologist and health policy researcher from Stanford University, compared the ruling to the second Enlightenment. He was one of several Covid-19 epidemiologists whose Twitter and Facebook accounts were scrubbed and removed from Google results during the pandemic.

The Louisiana appeals court, which heard the case, concluded that the Biden administration wrongfully pressured social media companies to silence critics. The ruling, however, was narrower than a previous decision by Trump-appointed judge Terry Doughty, who prohibited the administration from contacting social media companies.

Dr Bhattacharya praised the latest court ruling, stating that it upholds the democracy of ideas. He emphasized that the issue at hand is not whether the ideas are right or wrong, but rather who gets to control the expression of ideas in the public square.

This instance of censorship is not an isolated case. Lockdown critics have consistently claimed to be censored and sidelined. In fact, former National Institutes of Health director Dr Francis Collins sent an email to Dr Anthony Fauci in 2020, stating that the ideas presented by “fringe” epidemiologists required urgent and devastating responses.

The Great Barrington Declaration, authored by Dr Bhattacharya, Dr Sunetra Gupta of Oxford University, and Dr Martin Kulldorff of Harvard University, called for focused protection and fewer restrictions on the general healthy population. This idea was met with opposition from mainstream scientists, including Dr Fauci and Dr Collins. However, Dr Bhattacharya continues to advocate for the theory, which has garnered thousands of signatures in support.

The censoring actions taken by the federal government included targeting Dr Bhattacharya and numerous other individuals who criticized government COVID policy. As a result, their social media presence was suppressed and their voices were hindered. Dr Bhattacharya described it as a “crazy time.”

The widespread lockdowns implemented in 2020 had significant negative effects on the economy and students’ learning. Additionally, they contributed to a crisis of mental health among teenagers, who were isolated from social interactions and in-person classes. It is important to recognize and address the consequences of such measures.
