Azerbaijan’s Bold Offensive: Nagorno-Karabakh Under Attack – Latest Update by NPR

Azerbaijan Launches Anti-Terrorist Measures in Nagorno-Karabakh

In a recent video released by the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan, smoke can be seen rising from an area that Azerbaijan claims is occupied by Armenian forces in the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. The region, located within Azerbaijan, has experienced ongoing conflicts between Azerbaijan and Armenia since the Soviet period. Azerbaijan’s military has responded to recent landmine attacks that killed four soldiers and two civilians by launching “localized anti-terrorist measures”. Despite the presence of 2,000 Russian peacekeepers, no action has been taken against Azerbaijan’s offensive. Turkey has also provided military support to Azerbaijan. The current mission aims to disarm Armenian forces operating illegally in Nagorno-Karabakh and protect ethnic Azeris living in the region. The international community, including the United States, has called for an immediate end to hostilities and peaceful dialogue between the parties involved. Explosions and sirens have been reported in Nagorno-Karabakh’s capital, and Armenia is reassessing its reliance on Russia for security.

Tensions and Shifts in International Mediation Efforts

The tensions over Nagorno-Karabakh have fluctuated recently as Western powers have become more involved in mediating a solution. Armenia had shown willingness to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan, but with security guarantees for ethnic Armenians living there. However, Baku has taken advantage of its military superiority and Russian preoccupation with the war in Ukraine to dictate negotiation terms. Russia’s failure to support Armenia despite a collective security agreement has led to a western shift in Yerevan’s policies. Currently, 85 U.S. troops are participating in joint drills with Armenian forces, and Armenia’s government has expressed support for joining the International Criminal Court. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has also criticized the country’s reliance on Russia for security, citing the Russian Federation’s own need for weapons and ammunition.

Russia Calls for Ceasefire and Diplomatic Solution

Amidst the recent escalation of conflict, Russia’s foreign ministry has urged both Azerbaijan and Armenia to return to a ceasefire and seek a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
