Dr. Anthony Fauci to become distinguished professor at Georgetown University

Georgetown University made an exciting announcement on Monday, revealing that former chief White House medical adviser Anthony Fauci will be joining its faculty in July. Fauci will take on the role of professor in the infectious diseases division, marking his first venture into academia after leaving his long-standing career in government last year.

In a statement, Georgetown explained that Fauci will become a Distinguished University Professor within the School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. Additionally, Fauci will hold a position in Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy.

Fauci, who is 82 years old, retired from government work at the end of 2022 after serving the public for over 50 years. For nearly four decades, Fauci held the position of director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

While much of Fauci’s career focused on HIV and AIDS, where he made significant contributions to understanding and combating the disease, he gained widespread recognition in recent years for his leadership in America’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

Despite receiving both praise for his expertise and criticism from conservative lawmakers, Fauci remains dedicated to his field. In August, when announcing his departure from government, he expressed his intention to continue contributing to his field with the energy and passion he still possesses.

Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia expressed his deep honor in welcoming Dr. Anthony S. Fauci to the institution. DeGioia described Fauci as a dedicated public servant, humanitarian, and visionary global health leader.

Fauci had previously hinted at his interest in an academic role after leaving government. Last week, during The Hill’s Future of Health Care Summit, he mentioned his desire to inspire younger individuals to pursue careers in public service through writing, lecturing, consulting, and potentially getting involved in an academic center.
