Downey Police Chief to Retire, Announces Departure

After a fulfilling and rewarding career, Downey police Chief Leslie Murray, the city’s first female chief, has announced her retirement at the end of the year, according to authorities on Thursday.

Murray expressed her gratitude, saying, “I’ve had the privilege of serving alongside incredible individuals and for a community that I have deep roots in. I am excited for the next chapter for myself and my family.”

Murray commenced her journey as a Downey police officer in 1990 and steadily advanced through the ranks to achieve the distinction of becoming the first female police chief in 2021.

Downey Mayor Claudia M. Frometa applauded Chief Murray, stating, “It has been an honor to collaborate with Chief Murray, our city’s pioneering female chief and former captain of our Downey PD. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, resilience, exceptional dedication, and commitment to our city’s residents and police department.”

Downey City Manager Roger Bradley acknowledged Chief Murray’s substantial contribution to the community, saying, “Chief Murray has dedicated numerous years to the Downey community. Her efforts have undoubtedly improved the quality of life in Downey. On behalf of our staff, I extend our heartfelt thanks for her leadership, dedication, and exemplary example. While we will miss her presence, we wish her all the best as she embarks on new adventures.”

The Downey Police Department consists of 181 personnel, including 113 sworn officers and 68 non-sworn employees.

Bradley confirmed that a nationwide search for a new chief will be conducted “to ensure a smooth transition at the end of the year.”
