Don’t Miss Out: Apply for Susi Financial Support for Leaving Cert 2023 and Explore New Grants

Undergraduates from families with an income between €62,000 and €100,000 (with higher limits for larger families) are now eligible for a permanent €500 reduction in the annual €3,000 student contribution. This change will take effect starting from September and applications need to be made through Susi, the state grants agency.

Another revision has increased the threshold for the 50% student contribution grant from €55,240 to €62,000. This means that students whose family income falls below this threshold will have half of their €3,000 contribution covered by the state.

Students are encouraged to apply for these grants as early as possible through Susi. The application process is open until late autumn/early winter and late applications will be accepted. Applying early ensures students know their entitlements and can start receiving payments promptly. Currently, 60,500 applications out of 78,500 have been awarded funding, including over 30,500 new applicants.

Susi is the main source of state financial assistance for students pursuing further or higher education. Eligible students in further education, such as those in post-Leaving Cert courses, can receive a maintenance grant, while undergraduate students may qualify for both tuition fee and maintenance support. Students planning to study in the UK or Europe may be eligible for the maintenance grant, but the fee grant is only available to students studying within Ireland.

To qualify for a grant, applicants must meet certain criteria, including household income, nationality and residency in Ireland, the chosen course of study, and the applicant’s status as dependent, mature dependent, or independent. Students who believe they may be eligible can use the “Eligibility Indicator” on susi.ie for additional information.

Applying for a grant involves creating an account, submitting an online application, and providing the requested documents through the Susi student portal. In case of refusal, applicants will be given information on how to review and appeal the decision.
