Dolphins Attack Four Individuals on a Beach in Japan

Four individuals were attacked by dolphins in a single day on a beach in central Japan. A man in his 60s was attacked just yards away from the popular Suishohama Beach in Mihama, Fukui prefecture. His injuries included broken ribs and bites to his hands. Another man in his 40s was also attacked at the same beach and suffered bites on his arm. Later that day, two more people were injured in dolphin attacks. This marks the sixth dolphin attack in the prefecture this year, with similar incidents occurring last year as well.

While dolphin attacks are uncommon, experts have warned that bottlenose dolphins become stressed when they are forced to swim near humans. This disruption of their behavioral routines may lead them to see humans as potential threats to their territory or prey. In some cases, dolphins may even attack humans as a form of amusement. This is a dangerous situation due to the large size and strength of dolphins. Signs have been placed at Suishohama Beach cautioning swimmers not to approach or touch dolphins. Officials advise against entering the water if dolphins are spotted.
