Doctors Group Maintains their Position on Youth Gender Treatments

In 2018, the American Academy of Pediatrics took a firm stance in supporting comprehensive and appropriate healthcare for transgender and gender diverse youth. Now, nearly five years later, the medical group, which represents 67,000 US physicians, is reaffirming their position and calling for a systematic review of research on the outcomes of gender-affirming treatments, seen as the highest standard for evaluating medical research.

All 16 members of the AAP’s board voted to reaffirm the 2018 guidelines and acknowledge the need for additional detail. The review is expected to evaluate medical interventions such as puberty blockers and hormones. This comes at a time when GOP-driven bans on gender-affirming care, including therapy and surgery, are being implemented. Critics argue that children and teens cannot provide informed consent for these treatments and consider them experimental.

Despite the bans, a growing number of states face lawsuits, with some judges temporarily blocking or striking down the bans as unconstitutional. Early evidence suggests that gender-affirming care can benefit transgender teens struggling with anxiety and depression, and the AAP deems the government’s interference in medical decisions as a dangerous intrusion. The American Medical Association and other medical groups have also condemned these bans.

In Europe, five nations have urged caution in the use of puberty blockers and other treatments after conducting their own systematic evidence reviews. The AAP plans to update its recommendations and issue more clinical guidance for doctors in the field once the external research review is complete.
