Doctors advise Pope Francis to avoid public prayer, report describes pontiff’s good recovery.

His Holiness Pope Francis is currently recovering at a hospital in Rome where he underwent abdominal surgery earlier this week. The procedure, a laparotomy along with abdominal wall plastic surgery, was performed successfully. According to a statement released by the Vatican Press Office on Saturday, the Pope is currently in stable condition and undergoing convalescence aimed at minimizing strain on his abdominal wall to optimize the healing of the implanted prosthetic mesh and muscle fascia repair.

Despite experiencing good spirits and even joking with his doctors upon waking up, the Pope will not be leading a scheduled Angelus public prayer on Sunday as his doctors have urged him against doing so. Instead, he will be offering his private prayers and spiritually uniting himself with the faithful who wish to accompany him in prayer wherever they may be.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, Director of Abdominal and Endocrine Sciences at Gemelli Hospital, declared the surgery a complete success and that the pontiff is recovering well. During the operation, the doctors also removed adhesions that had caused partial blockage on his intestine. However, Alfieri revealed that this procedure was not the first for the Pope as he had also undergone abdominal surgeries in Argentina that resulted in scarring.

As a precaution, all of the pontiff’s private and general audiences have been canceled until June 18. Despite this setback, doctors remain optimistic that the Pope will not experience any further limitations on his travels and other activities once he has fully recovered.
