Certain Items That Require Proper Disposal

When it comes to disposing certain items, it is important to handle them appropriately to avoid harm to the environment. Batteries and electronics, for instance, must not be thrown into regular trash bins. Instead, consider donating your old but still functioning devices like televisions and cellphones. However, there are a few extra steps you need to take for items like old motor oil or unused paint. Contact a recycling center to properly dispose of them.

Important Items to Be Mindful of When Disposing

• Household batteries

  Not all batteries can be thrown in the trash. Alkaline batteries, such as AA, AAA, and 9-volt batteries, can be disposed of with regular trash. However, button cell or coin batteries, like those used in calculators and watches, contain silver and mercury, and should not be thrown in the trash. Find a battery recycler or see if any retailers accept them for recycling.

• Smartphones and tablets

  If you have an old cellphone or tablet, consider trading it in for a new one. Many carriers have trade-in programs where they take care of your old device for you. Electronics stores also often have their own recycling programs. Before getting rid of your device, make sure to factory reset it to protect your personal information.

• Televisions

  Televisions contain hazardous materials like glass and lead. Just like with cellphones and tablets, check with electronics stores for recycling programs. You can also donate your television to a thrift store or give it to a friend.

• Car batteries

  Car batteries contain lead and acid, making them unsafe for regular trash disposal. If you take your car to a shop, they will handle the disposal for you. If you change the battery yourself, check with local auto parts retailers as they may accept the old battery. The same applies to car tires.

• Motor oil

  When changing your car’s oil, keep the container the new oil came in. This way, you can reuse it to safely transport your used oil. Take the used oil to a recycling facility or an auto center for proper disposal.

• Thermometers

  Mercury-containing thermometers should not be thrown in regular trash. Look for mercury-free thermometers, as they can be disposed of normally. If you have a thermometer with mercury that you want to get rid of, consider donating it to small businesses or universities, or find a hazardous waste collection facility in your area.

• Paint

  Paint can be toxic, so it needs to be disposed of properly. Latex paint can be dried out before throwing it in the trash. Remove the top and let it dry, or speed up the process by mixing it with cat litter. Oil-based paint must be taken to a drop-off center for safe disposal.
