This post-tropical cyclone brought strong winds, rough surf, and heavy rains to New England and Maritime Canada, causing widespread damage. The storm made landfall with near-hurricane strength, toppling trees, flooding coastlines, and leaving tens of thousands without power. The US National Hurricane Center reported sustained winds of 70mph as the center of the storm reached Nova Scotia, about 135 miles west of Halifax. Tragedy struck in Searsport, Maine, when a 51-year-old motorist was killed by a falling tree limb during the high winds brought by post-tropical cyclone Lee. A tropical storm warning was in effect for a 230-mile stretch from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to the eastern end of Maine. The storm’s impact was felt in Bar Harbor, where a whale watch vessel broke free and crashed ashore in front of the College of the Atlantic. Authorities are working to prevent the leakage of 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel from the vessel. The storm also caused coastal flooding in Nova Scotia, knocked down power lines and trees, and disrupted ferry services. This region has already dealt with wildfires and severe flooding earlier in the summer. Halifax Stanfield International Airport had to cancel all flights for the day. Pam Lovelace, a councilor in Halifax, emphasized the toll the storm has taken on the mental health of the community, urging people to check on their neighbors’ well-being.
