The Directors Guild of America has announced that 87% of its members have approved the three-year contract negotiated with major Hollywood studios. These types of agreements have historically set the precedent for other union contracts. However, the Writers Guild and the actors guild have made it clear that they won’t be bound by the directors’ agreement. Currently, the writers are on strike, and SAG-AFTRA is in negotiations with the studios. Lesli Linka Glatter, the president of the Directors Guild, expressed their support for writers, actors, and all crew members during this time of labor unrest, as reported by The Los Angeles Times.

The Directors Guild has reached a tentative agreement with film and TV studios, addressing important issues such as the banning of live ammunition on sets and limitations on the use of artificial intelligence in productions. However, this agreement has not been met with enthusiasm by all members of the Writers Guild, who are currently on strike. The three-year tentative agreement, which includes raises of 5% in the first year followed by 4% and 3.5%, as well as improved safety programs, will be presented to the directors’ national board for consideration, according to The Washington Post.

In response to the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was fatally injured when a gun discharged on set, the Directors Guild has implemented a ban on live ammunition, along with a pilot program requiring safety supervisors. The issue of artificial intelligence has also been a topic of discussion during negotiations. The Directors Guild and the studios have agreed that AI is not a substitute for human members and their responsibilities. The next contract negotiations will involve the actors guild. By reaching an agreement with the directors, the studios have avoided the possibility of three major unions going on strike simultaneously, as reported by The New York Times.

The negotiations with the writers broke off on May 1, with guild leaders cautioning members that the studios might prioritize a deal with the directors. However, the writers argue that their concerns are unique to their profession and cannot be addressed through a single template. While the Directors Guild considers their contract historic, members of the Writers Guild are less satisfied, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
One striker, Allison Sanchez, took to Twitter to state her determination to keep striking until all their demands are met, saying “I’ll strike for years.” (Read more Directors Guild of America stories.)
