Despite Greece Defeat, Packie Bonner Says Euro 2024 Qualification Remains in Our Control

Despite winning only five out of the 24 competitive games under Stephen Kenny’s leadership, Ireland still has a chance to qualify for the upcoming Euro 2024 finals, according to former Italia ’90 hero, Packie Bonner. Kenny has faced intense scrutiny recently after a 2-1 loss in Greece, despite a 3-0 victory over Gibraltar. Bonner, now an Independent Director on the Football Association of Ireland’s Board, acknowledged the pressure on Kenny, stating that every manager faces it. Bonner emphasized the importance of results and the need for the team to win upcoming games. However, he also highlighted the significance of time for team development.

Bonner, who played for Ireland in Euro 88 and the World Cups in 1990 and 1994, believes that Ireland’s chances of qualifying are not completely gone. While acknowledging the challenging nature of games against France and Greece, he stressed the importance of upcoming matches. Bonner expressed the desire for Ireland to be competitive and to have a chance until the last game against Holland. He also shared his opinion that goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher should seek more playing time elsewhere to advance his career, as it would lead to more experience and better decision-making.

Furthermore, Bonner attended the opening of Dunfanaghy Youths FC’s new pitch in Donegal, which is named after Callum Friel, a former player who passed away from cancer at the age of 17 in 2020.
