DeSantis Suggests RFK Jr. as Potential CDC or FDA Candidate

Florida Governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis expressed his openness to appointing Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a Democratic candidate, to a major federal health agency. During an interview with Clay Travis, DeSantis stated that he shares common ground with Kennedy on COVID-19 policies and the perceived “corruption” within federal health officials.

DeSantis responded to the question of considering Kennedy as his running mate by suggesting that he could potentially assign him to the FDA or CDC. However, DeSantis noted that there may be disagreements with Kennedy on certain issues, making it less viable for him to be the vice president.

Although Kennedy’s chances of winning the presidency are slim, Republicans, including former President Trump, have embraced him to disrupt the Democrats. Kennedy appeared before the House Judiciary select subcommittee, addressing concerns about the “weaponization” of the federal government, but faced criticism from the Democratic members.

Known for his anti-vaccine activism and opposition to COVID-19 mitigation measures, Kennedy appeals to the libertarian faction of the right that opposes vaccine mandates and lockdowns, while raising doubts about vaccine safety, including the COVID-19 vaccine. Recent controversial remarks by Kennedy regarding the targeting and lethality of the coronavirus sparked backlash from Democrats.

DeSantis shares Kennedy’s disdain for the “woke” federal bureaucracy and has been vocal about his intention to dismantle several departments, such as Education, Commerce, Energy, and the IRS. As governor, DeSantis has strongly opposed federal health agencies and private companies in Florida that implemented what he perceived as overly strict COVID-19 policies.

However, DeSantis’s proposition of appointing Kennedy to a position within his administration drew criticism from fellow Republican candidate and former vice president Mike Pence. Pence asserted that only pro-life Americans would be considered for leadership roles in the FDA, CDC, or HHS.
